Error messages in Outlook

When you have a problem using Outlook, you usually get an error message which looks like this:

The key information comes in the error message in the form of an error number. In the above example, the error number is 0x800CCC92.
If you get such an error message locate the error number below on this page and follow the guide to fix it.

Error 0x800CCC91

This error message is caused by the fact that you have set an antivirus program to scan all emails automatically.
Changing the settings within Outlook will not solve the issue. You need to go to your antivirus program and change the settings there.
To learn how to do this in Norton Antivirus click here.

Error 0x800CCC92

Check your Outlook settings, making sure that your POP3 and SMTP usernames, passwords and servers are correct.
If you are still getting this error, it is possible that your password has somehow become corrupted. Try changing it in your account's control panel.
Also, make sure that your account and domain name are still active.

Error 0x800CCC7D

You get this error because your Outlook is set up to use Secure Socket Layer (SSL), which we don't use.
To fix this problem, open Outlook and follow this steps:
    1. Click "Accounts" in the "Tools" menu
    2. Click on your email account then click "Properties"
    3. Click "Advanced"
    4. On this screen remove the checks from the boxes "This server requires a secure connection" for both Outgoing mail (SMTP) and Incoming mail (POP3)

Errors 0x800CCC0D, 0x800CCC0E and 0x800CCC0F

The client connects to a port that is blocked or unavailable on the mail server. If you are attempting to send a message, the blocked port is 25 (SMTP), and if you are attempting to retrieve a message, the blocked port is 110 (POP3). Refer to the error message for the protocol and port numbers.

First check your Outlook settings, making sure that your POP3 and SMTP usernames, passwords and servers are correct. Also, make sure that your account and domain name are still active.
If the settings are correct and your account and domain name are active, one possibility is that you may not be connected to the Internet or the connection is bad. To test your connection follow the procedures below :

For incoming mail server (port 110)
    1. Click the "Start" button then "Run". Type "telnet 110" and press Enter. You will then be connected to the email server
    2. Type in "USER" followed by your email address (example: USER info@hostaggio.com) and then press Enter. You should get a "+OK"
    3. Type in "PASS" followed by your password (example: PASS secretpass) and press Enter. If it is correct, you will get another "+OK"
    4. If you can do this, you have connected to the mail server, so the problem lies somewhere with your Outlook
If you get "-ERR authorization failed" at step 4, it is possible that your password has somehow become corrupted. Try changing it in your account's control panel and try again.
For outgoing mail server (port 25)
    1. Click the "Start" button then "Run". Type "telnet 25" and press Enter. You will then be connected to the email server
    2. If you see "220 mail.somedomain.com ESMTP", you have connected to the mail server, so the problem lies somewhere with your Outlook
In the case you receive "connection refused" message or timeout, you need to contact your ISP with the request to open port 25 in their firewall (which they will probably not do). If they don't want to open the port you have to use their SMTP server for your outgoing mail connection. You can obtain their SMTP settings from either their tech support or possibly their web site.
The following service providers are currently known to block SMTP connections and require your use of their SMTP server: 1st.net, ATT WorldNet, Earthlink, Lineone.net, MSN, Mindspring, Sympatico, Bellsouth.

If you are running a firewall software, configure it to grant access to the Internet for the following file: Msimn.exe
If you have Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall read this and this information on Symantec's web site.

If you have the Norton Antivirus e-mail scanning feature enabled, read this information on Symantec's web site.

Error 0x800CCC79

The cause of this error is due to the fact that the SMTP server requires authentication.

Check your Outlook settings, making sure that your SMTP username, password, and server are correct.
Then follow this procedure to make sure you set up Outlook to use SMTP authentication :
    1. Click "Accounts" in the "Tools" menu
    2. Click on your email account then click "Properties"
    3. Click "Servers"
    4. Make sure the "My server requires authentication" box is checked

Also, you may get this error because the server does not recognise the senders email address as being valid.
To check your email address follow this procedure :
    1. Click "Accounts" in the "Tools" menu
    2. Click on your email account then click "Properties"
    3. Click "General"
    4. Make sure the address in the "E-mail address" field is created in your account's control panel
    5. Delete messages in the "Outbox" folder and try again
